We can’t upset our readers!

One of my early disappointments was my inability to get this photo published. It was shortly after I started as a Californian photographer in late 1981, maybe 1982. I had completed an assignment at the Valley Plaza shopping mall, and as I was leaving, I saw this young boy in a cookie shop. I was struck by the juxtaposition of a little boy drinking his milk, yet holding a very real and menacing looking toy gun. The editors said the picture could not run because it would likely upset readers. It has always been one of my favorite enterprise shots. (Enterprise shots, or what our old boss, chief photographer Jack Knight , called “hip shots,” are pictures that are not assigned, that you find just by being out and about.)
